South African Juggernaught: SA Metal at it’s finest
Posted on June 5th, 2009 in Alterniverse in South Africa, Metal, music opinion, music review, south african bands
Juggernaught.
The name births images, in the mind that revolve around destruction on an epic scale – grinding wheels of war, devastation and obliteration – and at the Headbanger’s Bash held at Tempo’s entertainment park this past Saturday, the band proved that they are worthy of the moniker they’ve chosen.
Delivering a sound that finds its home somewhere between the melody of Mississippi Blues, and the crunching grind of Pantera-inspired Man-Metal, the hairy men in plaid converted a few new willing disciples to loudly preach the gospel of “Mountain-Man Rock” beneath the banner of Juggernaught.
In amongst the helter-skelter mess of South African Grindcore, Metalcore and In Flames-wannabe bands, its refreshing to find a group unapologetically revelling in the precepts upon which heavy music was founded – sex, beer and rock ‘n roll.
If you’re looking for an act that offers a quietly-cultured sort of entertainment – something suitable for a first date, or business meeting – keep looking. If, on the other hand, you want to experience, first-hand, Metal the way it was meant to be made – with solid grooves, beer-soaked performances and whiskey-written lyrics – then keep an eye out for Juggernaught.
